Hemorrhoids and Pregnancy

Hemorrhoids are swollen veins in or around the anus. Women often encounter hemorrhoids during pregnancy due to the increased flow and pressure of blood to the lower half of the body.

Hemorrhoids are more likely to occur during pregnancy to women who have had bouts of hemorrhoids in the past but women who have never had hemorrhoids are still at risk, especially if proper prevention methods are not used. Hemorrhoids can be triggered during the birth of the child or at any stage throughout the pregnancy. Hemorrhoids in pregnant women sometimes disappear naturally after giving birth but this shouldnt be taken for granted as the hemorrhoids can inflame further and become more serious.

Straining while going to the toilet (which is often caused by constipation) is an important and common factor leading to hemorrhoids in pregnant women. Pregnant women are more at risk of hemorrhoids due to constipation than women who are not pregnant because they have a higher than normal blood pressure and increased blood volume.

If you are pregnant and notice one or more of the following signs, its likely you have a hemorrhoid. Signs include blood coating the stool, blood on the toilet paper, an itchy anus, a mound of skin coming out of the anus and pain while sitting down or during bowel movement.

If you can avoid having hemorrhoid in the first place you will save yourself a lot of pain and suffering. By drinking lots of water, eating high fiber foods, avoiding straining, getting regular exercise and not standing or sitting for long periods of time are all useful techniques that greatly reduce the chance of hemorrhoids occurring.

Hemorrhoids can cause excruciating pain, a few tips to reduce that pain include:

1. Sit in warm water a few times each day

2. Put an ice pack on your anus a few times each day

3. Use soft toilet paper and clean to anus completely after passing a stool

These 3 tips have been proven to reduce hemorrhoid pain significantly. If you really want to experience good pain relief however, the best way to do that is to focus on curing the hemorrhoids entirely. Many different techniques are used these days including applying gels and creams to the hemorrhoids, surgically removing hemorrhoids, and using natural hemorrhoid remedies.

Different methods of treatment should be applied depending on the severity of the hemorrhoids. Severe hemorrhoids will most likely need surgery while less serious cases can be treated easily using natural treatments.
